About David Johnson

David Johnson is a lifelong Kentuckian, public school teacher, and community advocate who believes government should work for everyday people—not just the wealthy and well-connected. With deep family roots in Estill County and a lifetime in Madison County, David has dedicated himself to serving families, students, and communities across Eastern Kentucky.

Having taught in both Madison County and Estill County Schools, David has worked closely with students and families from diverse backgrounds and understands the challenges facing Kentucky's public schools. As a special education teacher, he works every day with students with disabilities and sees firsthand how decisions made in Frankfort affect real people. His commitment to service extends beyond the classroom. As a former member, appointed by Mayor Blythe to the Richmond Human Rights Commission, David became a strong advocate for fair housing, equal employment opportunities, and ensuring that every citizen is treated with dignity and respect. He has worked alongside people of all political backgrounds, earning a reputation as someone more interested in solving problems than engaging in partisan politics.

David has also been an active voice in the Kentucky General Assembly, advocating for issues that matter to working families. In 2020, he played a key role in helping pass Kentucky’s Insulin Copay Cap, making life-saving medication more affordable for thousands of Kentuckians. He has consistently spoken out for affordable healthcare, strong public schools, government transparency, and policies that put people before special interests.

Known throughout the region as a neighbor you can count on, David believes that no community should be forgotten and every voice deserves to be heard. Whether in the classroom, the community, or the halls of government, he remains committed to fighting for the people of Kentucky and building a stronger future for the next generation.

WORKING FOR OUR COMMUNITY

    the Issues

I’m running because I believe our community deserves strong schools, affordable healthcare, and honest, transparent government that works for everyday people — not the rich and powerful. As a public school teacher, I see every day how decisions made in Frankfort affect real families, and I want to make sure those decisions work for the people who live here.

Leadership means representing everyone, not just the people who agree with you. I want every person in this district to know that they will not be ignored or silenced. Whether you’re a Democrat, Republican, Independent, or someone frustrated with politics altogether, your concerns deserve to be heard and respected.

As a teacher, I know strong schools depend on proper funding, support for educators, and services for students with disabilities. I will advocate for policies that support teachers, strengthen special education, and make sure schools have the resources they need to help every student succeed.

While others pose for pictures, we need to truly invest in Kentucky's future--our children!

Access to healthcare is critical in rural communities. I support strengthening rural clinics, protecting local hospitals, and ensuring healthcare providers have the resources they need to serve patients close to home.

I do not support cuts to Kentucky Medicaid, and I strongly oppose legislation that has placed 35 hospitals on a financial “watch list,” putting access to care at risk for families across our state. Rural Kentuckians deserve stability—not uncertainty—when it comes to their healthcare.

I’ve worked to lower healthcare costs, including supporting the insulin copay cap, and I will continue to advocate for policies that keep rural clinics open, expand access to care, and make healthcare more affordable for families.

A strong local economy starts with working families and small businesses. I support policies that create good jobs, keep money in our local communities, and help small businesses grow without unnecessary red tape. I believe in investing in education and workforce training, supporting local employers, and making sure the economy works for everyday people — not just the wealthy or well-connected.

Tariffs can raise prices for Kentucky families, farmers, and small businesses. When costs go up, local people feel it first. I believe trade policies should protect Kentucky jobs without making everyday life more expensive for the people who live and work here.

David Johnson is known throughout Richmond as a dedicated advocate for fair housing, equal employment opportunities, and treating every person with dignity and respect. As a former member, appointed to the Richmond Human Rights Commission by Mayor Robert Blythe, David worked to ensure that all citizens had a voice and access to equal opportunities within the community.

Beyond his local service, he has advocated for numerous issues before the Kentucky General Assembly, including efforts to improve access to affordable healthcare and support working families. Throughout his public service, David has built relationships with people from all political backgrounds, focusing on solving problems rather than engaging in partisan politics.

Many in Richmond know David not for political labels, but as a neighbor they can count on—someone who listens, shows up, and works to make the community a better place for everyone.
